Mowbray takes over at Middlesbrough

Tony Mowbray, pictured at Celtic Park, Glasgow, last October while he was Celtic manager, has been named the new manager at Middlesbrough, where he is a former team cap;tain.

LONDON (AFP) - English Championship side Middlesbrough announced on Tuesday that former skipper Tony Mowbray will take over as club manager replacing Gordon Strachan who resigned last week.

Mowbray, who was born in nearby Saltburn, captained the northeastern club during a successful nine-year spell between 1982-1991.

Formerly in charge of West Brom and Hibs, Mowbray had a disastrous spell as coach of Glasgow giants Celtic which lasted only nine months until March. It was Strachan he took over from in that job also.

He will be officially unveiled at a press conference called for later Tuesday.
